Can a novice / intermediate kayakers to drive the west coast of San Juan without a guide?

I have two 14 Necky 'Manitou kayaks and I plan to take my sister to San Juan Island in 2 weeks to go kayaking and hopefully that place for a few killer whales. My plan is to hug the coast and south of the park on the edge of lime kiln State Park then maybe the next day to explore the near Roche Harbor and Griffin Bay. I've done some sea-kayaking along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, but not on the island of San Juan. I have tide charts, know enough to closely monitor the weather and wind. Is particularly dangerous area? * We will need a guide? I tend think if the guide can be first-time over these waters should not be too hard. Ideas?

I have no specific knowledge of the local environment, but here are some things to consider: It's good you check the weather, tides (actually the current is at least as important as tide height). Do you know how accurate the weather forecast? You can accurately assess their skills in the wind speed? Beginners (assuming that your sister has kayaked), can usually handle up to about 10 knots of wind. 15 could be a real struggle. How rescue / Recovery capabilities? Can do in terms? That is when you are most likely to need when weather arrives unexpectedly. How about equipment? Water is really cold. I would go with less than a wetsuit. Dragging line can be a good idea, just in case. These are the things you have to guide: someone who knows the weather well have adequate facilities and let them if something goes wrong. If you are unsure, consider the lesson, where you will improve your Skills and Case, and it will help you better determine when and where you can go.
