In 1957 and '58, I was a soldier in the U.S. Army serving in Germany as a peacekeeping force. Without a war to focus our energy, we were left to our own devices to entertain ourselves. Two large buildings on the outskirts of the city located 250 soldiers each. Our thirty to thirty feet room on the third floor scooped a 200 watt outlet and one ceiling lamp in the middle of the room. Nine beds with foot lockers all furniture included. Many of the soldiers took college extension courses, but found it difficult the pages to see. So together with a buddy and I built a small side table for any man to a lamp to keep the required books. Army regulations prevented us from using extension cords longer than six meters, but there was no rule specifically prohibiting the rewiring of the building. I have not asked, I did it.
In the summer camped at Grafenwehr Near East Germany. Long known as a training camp, but also characterized by a beautiful golf course and skiing in the winter. An alternative site is located on the North Sea. Our radar 91mm cannon set on a cliff overlooking the beach where they can take potshot at dummy PT towed by a boat. Every tenth shot or something, a cheer marked the destruction of a target. I am sure that the PT boat occupants wanted for a long tow rope. My job as radio operator on duty eight hours needed in the truck radio and forty-eight hours off. I remember once a colleague threw a pencil at me, which made the main transmitting antenna while transmitting. A loud explosion and a six-inch arc of light illuminates the radio room.
Steep sandy beaches and cliffs protected the crystal clear waters of seventy-five degrees.
Among these were irresistible cove just two miles from the camp. Loading a jeep with two shelter halves, a badminton set, a walkie talkie, mess kits and a large German radio for music, a radio operator and co-I on the way to the beach. AC of 110 volts was improvised by connecting the end of the radar generator and run two miles of double E8 phone wire to our makeshift Beach Resort. The army made rubber mattresses for many water fun. Many fed a driftwood fire where we roasted potatoes and grilled veal chops purchased from the town butcher. A dozen bottles of beer in a net at the end of a cool rope in the sea. Several German girls in the area on holiday with us at the beach and the sea for a good time.
All these activities may go unpunished by the army, but we were fit and ready to serve our country in a time of war.
