What is the correct orientation to hold kayak paddle?

I was a kayaker for years, but always the basic rectangular fine kayak paddle. I bought new laminate which has more aerodynamic shape. The picture you see, my old paddle is like the bottom, is like a new elevation: http://members.optusnet.com.au/aus-kayak-fishing/articles/img/paddles.jpg I would think that this new orientation so that larger paddles half (closest to the edge of the text) would be in the water first, common sense tells me that in this way even shallow paddle give you a large area to paddle. But the images I saw show the kayak paddle is held like as stated in picuture, wider part of the blade into the water last. This is the right way to do it? Why is that?

It is used as you have shown in the picture. This is used to "feather" the knife in the water, using both much (or little) as you need with each stroke. This allows you to fine tune your stroke and use other finesse, or "feel". Believe me, you LOVE it. I never returned to the "old" style!
