Camping in California?

stupid question, I know, but someone has first-hand experience with some top notch camping places in California? Some of my buddies and I (23 years) looking for a good place with lots to do, such as fishing, kayaking, hiking, etc. It is something first-time camper must prepare and carry out a tent, wood meal, sleeping bags? Thanks a lot.

One must be careful also in this time of year to avoid places with emenities.
