Kayak Materials
Over the years, kayaking equipment have undergone a fundamental change. From simple plastic kayak for better materials, such as rotationally molded polyethylene, fiberglass and Kevlar are all used to make kayaks today. Use these materials has greatly improved the quality and performance kayaks, thereby raising the overall level of sport.
Major Materials for Kayaks
Basically, kayaks are made of three materials - rotationally molded plastic, fiberglass or Kevlar.
Rotationally molded plastic (Rotomold): The most popular material rotomold kayaks kayaks are the strongest and perfect for roughing out. This is only a kind of plastic, but it is tough, flexible and softer than normal plastic. Paddling a kayak can easily take over a piece of rock without worrying about damage to kayaks.
In fact, even if these kayaks are thrown from the roof of the car, they would still suffer from a few minor Dings or abrasions. Rotomold is the cheapest of all materials, and therefore most often used for the manufacture of kayaks. The only drawback rotomold kayak is that it's the hardest type of kayak.
Rotomold kayaks are the cheapest form of plastic or polyethylene kayaks. Expensive plastic kayak is a cross-linked kayak. Cross linked kayaks made of thick foam core between two layers (outer and internal) of plastic.
The foam core makes the kayak very strong and durable than rotomold kayaks. However, disadvantage of these kayaks is that they are very difficult and more expensive than rotomold kayaks.
Laminate: About 15 to 20 percent lighter than rotomold kayaks, fiberglass kayaks must be handled a little more carefully. Unlike rotomold kayaks, these kayaks are unable Dings, abrasions, or bumpy ride over rocks. Must be provided and from salt water and thoroughly clean sea kayaking session it spoils kayak very quickly. However, if used carefully, fiberglass kayaks can take many years.
Kevlar: Known for his great strength and durability, Kevlar kayaks are the lightest available. Kevlar is an extremely lightweight material is usually used for the manufacture of bulletproof vests. The ideal combination of strength and light weight led to an increase in popularity Kevlar kayaks.
One of the main disadvantages Kevlar kayak is that it develops a fault then the fix is not too easy. Also Kevlar kayaks are expensive kayaks are available. However, Kevlar kayaks should be treated with caution and not be subject to large roughing out.
Wood: Wood is one of the traditional materials used for the construction of kayaks. Wooden kayaks are very nice and also perform very well in all conditions. However, they lack the variety of designs and sophisticated features that most fiber glass, plastic or inflatable kayaks offer.
Carbon: Carbon is another widely used material in the manufacture of kayaks. Carbon Kayaks are light but offer high stiffness.
These are the most used materials in construction kayaks and it is recommended that riders choose only one kayak of these materials.
