Are you in the process of replacing the carpet on your used pontoon boat? If so, here are a few helpful tips for doing the work itself. A client asked me recently, he thought of replacing his pontoon carpet with indoor / outdoor carpet tiles, and whether or not they could be used on boats?
I told him I would not recommend using the carpet tiles if they will come after time on the corners of the sun and water. I always recommend a solid piece of indoor-outdoor carpet or marine grade carpet.
Remove all pontoon boat steering console furniture including floor and trim until you get to the multiplex. Now you can from the carpet that maybe attached to the plywood and one of the old glue that stayed behind. Possible to do a little sanding to get you fresh clean surface. Now is a good time for a multiplex required to inspect repaired or replaced.
Next step is to roll the new carpet on the pontoon boat and let it to be flat carpet. Once the new carpet is ready to install, half of the carpet and glue the new carpet and the floor of the boat. I recommend using marine grade contact cement spray. It would allow a few minutes to maneuver the carpet into place to work out any lumps in the carpet. I prefer to stick at a higher temperature than 50 degrees and make sure you have a good new hook knife or carpet knife.
Now in doing the same steps with the rest of pontoon boat flooring and carpet. You may want another person help you install and set half hands is not a bad thing. Now is a good time to go for lunch when you need it carpet for a bit to settle for the next step.Â
Next step is to cut off the overhanging parts of the carpet and installing floor trim. Now you can reuse your pontoon furniture and boat steering console. Installing carpet pontoon boat is not really big project to do yourself, especially if you call for help.
