Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, and - Brief History

The Aztecs, archeology completely merges with history. Image and rebus writing Aztec manuscripts and accounts of Bernal Diaz del Castillo and Bernardino SahagĂșn resources are as important as the monuments Tenochtitlan, which lies under the streets modern Mexico City.

The Aztecs were among the last wild Chichimecs enter the valley of Mexico after the fall of Tula. For a time were vassals of the Aztecs some of the more civilized city-states in the valley as a Colhuacan, and already in mid-fourteenth century, the Aztecs took residence in the small islands in the swampy Lake Texcoco. Aztecs allied with Tepanecs who decide Azcapotzalco, but later turned on his allies, and is subjected in 1428th

Large Moctezuma I, one of the former Aztec kings, then embarked on a policy of expansion and conquest outside the valley in Mexico, and one of his successors, Ahuitzotl (1486 - 1502), welded empire stretching from coast to coast and from the valley of Mexico to Guatemala.

The Aztecs, however, were never quite the highest in Mesoamerica, as were the Incas in Peru. Tarascans, some Mixtecs, and even Tlaxacans who were close to their neighbors, decided against them, a circumstance which was to help the Spaniards bring their downfall.

In one of the great moments of history, Cortez and his men finally saw Aztec city of Tenochtitlan to march inland from Veracruz in the 1519th Bernard Dial del Castillo describes the confrontation of two worlds in a simple but lively prose.

Inside Lake Texcoco and all around its edges were countless flats. Three barrier leads from the mainland to the island in the middle of the city, and the network Channel laced Metropolis. Lakes and canals were full of canoes and the whole scene was alive with people. Estimates suggest that the full area city embraced 60,000 apartments and 300,000 people.

In the heart of Tenochtitlan was the great pyramid with its twin temples dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec god war, and Tlaloc, the Aztec rain god. Nearby are other smaller pyramids and temples, and the square was the infamous skull-rack with grisly exhibit thousands of human victims, the national deity. All of this medium, sacred precinct was surrounded by walls, and just behind the palace walls Aztec emperors, including the tragic Moctezuma II, who was in the face of invaders confused idea that bearded Topiltzin Cortez was Quetzalcoatl returned from behind the sea.

Along the streets and canals of Tenochtitlan houses stood on the stone-faced platform. Resembled dwellings of ancient Teotihuacan and Tula in that space for cooking, sleeping, eating, and storage are arranged around a central courtyard. The walls were of stone and mud and the roof were made of wooden beams and columns. Grand Palace tend to follow the same plan. Most of the buildings were whitewashed in Tenochtitlan and provided settings for the glittering gaudy painted stucco-covered pyramid dotted the city. Each of the 20 clans were said to have its own square, temple, and the market for its own part of town, and the these companies were included clan again four larger quarters, and even with their own square ceremonial centers and markets.

Tenochtitlan was the least desirable proportion of land (and water) in the valley of Mexico, but the Aztecs can choose place because it was the only space available and could be approached only on foot through the fortified embankments. Growth of the city Tenochtitlan and any pattern, it took was the subject chinampa farming, breeding, when the artificial gardens, or lands are built into the water, vegetation and lake bottom mud. The system is still practiced today in Xochimilco section of the valley in Mexico, so the technique is well known. Chinampa beds are extremely prolific. Yield bumper, plus the relative case of food, which could be transferred by canoe over a considerable distance, formed the economic base of the city. One of the comments are around Tenochtitlan Spanish was that the houses in a remote part of the lake, between Chinampas, tended to be simpler than those in the central part of town. These lakes suburban homes probably farmers, whose production permanently urban population.

Tenochtitlan was a hive of activity, both traders and craftsmen. Not only were merchants and markets of the immediate life of the city, but some of the activities of groups extended outside the city of remote parts of the Aztec Empire and other nations. These traders Pochteca as they were called, traveled extensively on business trips on behalf of the State also served as ambassadors and spies. Artisans city - potters Jewelers, featherworkers and metal-workers - specialists were craft. Luxury goods for the nobility form a large part of what is produced.
