The first time on the boat
I think I am a long time sailor, but I was too long, straw hat, as well. I remember those days of clear blue ... sky and sea, when I went in my 42 'Chris Craft, add strength to move and just watched the bow would have fallen straight. I would ease the throttles back a bit, and listen to those engines to sync .... that cool-sounding hum. What a feeling ... to the sky ... pesky sailboat got in my way. It would seem that it would turn on his sailboat across my path on purpose. I would turn away, sometimes narrowly, (not too close) to my disappointment. But I was young in those days, and knew nothing better. Most of those times, boats had to turn (tack) to stay in deep water. Their proposals are 4 to 5 feet and is located in the channel is for them. Plying waters in the Great South Bay in those days, you had to stay in the channels ... It was shallow!
I would shoot at Davis Park and Watch Hill on Fire Island (Long island's barrier beach) on the weekend in fine, or go out of Fire Island Inlet certain shark Fishing ... maybe some lines out in the Atlantic Ocean. Tuna always sounds good. When I held the motor Boat North Shore Long Island, so I head on Eatons' (Huntington harbor area) on Long Island Sound. We look at the boiling water to those bluefish! Casting in, on the stump of the bunker, which are created, warned that the action was anything to do. Chopper (great bluefish) the breath that caught the bunker and you will be one hell of a fight. It was a feeling from time to time. Connecticut has always tease the rocky coast always brought a big fish! I never noticed the fishing boats with us. For that matter, I never saw them fishing at all.
We get to have fun meeting, which lasted all weekend, either anchored or dock. It was true, it is beautiful run power boater. There were times when the generator gave out and the engine sputtered to a halt, but all in all, what the penalty is too high heels. Just turn the key, let go dock lines, and hit gas. How much simpler it can get? What pleasure.
At one point, my wife, Yvette and I had to move ashore. Reluctantly, my boating days came to an abrupt end. We had not this plan. We kept getting larger and prettier Power boats live on, then which is a sale (in those wood days), to the point where we could put a deposit on a house, and when, if needed. That came sooner than later. With my new career and at home keeps me busy, I thought I would miss boating. By the end of the first year I was back on the water, but not exactly as you or I would have.
In truth, all I remember is walking dock ships mediation. There the high plateau on these ships, but they were not props, the mast! I do not know how I look at the ships in the port -- internet was not around anymore (at least I do not think so). I remember the board strengthen the case of mast, bow first in the dock and continued to the stern where the cockpit. He sat down and we look forward to, I looked to the aluminum rod toward heaven. "This is sailing, Doug," said I thought. What are you doing sitting in it? I thought. "No," I said. He looked it seemed simple. Rudder control and outboard motor in the rear space propulsion. Still sitting, I felt repulsed. I looked at the beige and tan deck, noticing the elegant lines, as my eyes forward towards the bow. The only thing that broke the lines, this big thing sticking out from the front of a high deck.
My thoughts moved back to the time my cousin and I went sailing. That was my first experience with sailing. We were about 13 or 14 and lived on the water in Seaford, South Coast Long Island. Sometimes I would stay on weekends. Their huge wooden boat would be docked at the rear with 17 'speed boat. This weekend was special because in addition to their huge boat was a new addition. This small wooden centerboard sailboat, all possible 19 '. It was "Lightning" open cockpit sailboat. My cousin Barry had a great birthday gift, which included regular training lessons for the next day. As luck and Barry I. His family was too boaters to make it seem special, custom sailboat. But our young age, we knew that the adventure was about to begin! Morning it was not fast enough. Breakfast out of the way, ringing door Bell brought excitement.
In the past, my cousin Barry, his friends and I went around the zoom on his 17 'Four Winns inboard outboard Speedster. It seemed that one of the fastest ships in the area. I would like to play with the carburetor and the timing extending acceleration and top end. I remember, even if it has a talent for engines. I taught him water with a daring ship entertainment, such as jumping waves and hard sliding turnabouts. Looking at the boat, not knowing what speed can reach or anything else for that matter, I was very curious and would like to start the day.
Life jackets were placed on board with lunch goodies. Sailing instructor looked after 20 years and began by giving us a lesson on the theory and the effects of wind on sail boats in port. Armed with this knowledge, we ventured out with him putting what we were taught to the test - our test! It really went smoothly, as we put on the boat at various angles to the wind, and accordingly adjust the sails. All of our forward movement. Clearer We have to sail adjustments, the faster we went. Close to water, in this small boat, from any speed seem especially quickly as the water rushed by the side. We made over your toes (ship heeled) and we all moved to the side. The boy, her feet and go! He taught us how to head up into the wind to stop, and switch from one side to the other wind. Switching the wind from coming Portside boat over to starboard is called "crossing" if you are going into the wind. It is called "jibbing" when wind coming from the back (the back of the ship). Instructor, things seem easy, which eased our nervousness.
Confidence grew, as we managed to maneuver. Our instructor just watched and what we were doing things, correcting us here and there and gives us indicators. He seemed more like a friend. What we did not know was that our big test was coming - Dock! As we returned to the house Barrys 'We had to dock ships. I told you not to reverse the boat! No engine, this fact! AAHHHHHH !!!!!! We thought We went to crash! We were all a great canoe paddle dock comes to us. But alas ... What was different maneuver? As young boys, luck was on our side. Which maneuver was "coming into the wind" (turning the boat head to wind) and my mysterious right to the dock. Perfect!
Barry's mother was complimented by an instructor on how well we Two young boys and did what we showed, Marine. I'm really not sure what the instructor said, but it must be better than good, because we were allowed out alone! The only thing that was asked to be close to home and not venture too far, we have agreed to immediately. We could not contain themselves. I think his mother does not have to, because we go in the speedster at all times, zipping back when the weather changes.
The day was still beautiful and we went out. It was the wind out of the channel and a few tacks get out in the bay. I remember that the "broad reach" (wind comes alongside the ship), for a while before we realized wind rose. My cousin Barry was very brave. He would try different setting sail, you are looking for maximum torque. Think that what he did in life - to find those moments of peak. Sailboats flew! We were proud of him go so quickly. But the feeling soon evaporated as We looked at some of the darks skies overhead if we come speedster, it would not be a problem. What we realized is sailboat You can not just zip back!
